MC.today: Adapting a WordPress website for handling high-traffic

MC.today is Ukraine’s leading online media outlet covering marketing and innovative business. Given the enormous volume of content and the constant growth of its audience, developing a high-load news portal capable of maintaining stability during any traffic spikes became critically important for the publication. As part of the project, a comprehensive optimization of the website’s loading speed was carried out to ensure readers have instant access to articles from any device. We focused on making sure the technical foundation fully matched the modern lifestyle of MC.today’s users, where high performance and fast resource operation are the quality standard for a quality digital media outlet.

MC.today Mission

MC.today strives to help Ukrainians become more successful by inspiring them with examples of creativity and innovative thinking. To make such support available to millions of readers every second, we carried out a deep optimization of WordPress for high-load projects, enabling the site to handle any influx of inspired audience. Through its work, the publication changes the world for the better, and we, in turn, ensured the acceleration of the news portal’s performance so that no important idea would be lost due to long loading times. After all, every second matters on the path to the next level of development, and fast resource operation becomes the key to comfortable interaction between the media and the most active nation in the world.

Problem

While MC.today was receiving up to 500,000 users per month, the standard WordPress configuration managed fine, but beyond that threshold problems began to emerge. The site started crashing more frequently, and the inaccessibility of the admin panel demanded immediate scaling of the web project. It became clear that a deep optimization of the WordPress database was necessary for the media outlet’s stability. Under these conditions, ordinary fixes were not enough — a comprehensive adaptation of the WordPress site for high load was required. We focused on eliminating bottlenecks in the architecture so that even during peak traffic moments, editors could publish content without interruption and readers could access materials without failures or delays.

Task

We needed to identify the main architectural obstacles that were preventing the system from effectively handling growing traffic. The web resource performance optimization began with an in‑depth technical audit, the goal of which was to prepare the high-traffic online magazine’s site for uninterrupted operation.

We focused on finding solutions that would allow improvements to be implemented for greater stability. This was not just a point fix, but a comprehensive WordPress site optimization aimed at eliminating critical delays. As a result, we managed to lay the foundation for reliable operation of the publication even during moments of extreme load.

Process

Here are the WordPress issues we identified at MC.today at SOLAR Digital and how we fixed them:

Analytics The use of Slimstat Analytics was overloading the database by 1.5 GB. We replaced it with an external Laravel-based microservice. The counter polling now takes place in the browser, which provided a real acceleration of the WordPress site’s performance, completely freeing the engine from unnecessary computations.

Caching and Hosting We implemented the W3 Total Cache + Memcached stack. In addition, professional server architecture configuration was carried out for the media outlet: the database was moved to a physically separate server. This eliminated resource conflicts and allowed the system to stably process requests from thousands of users simultaneously.

Performance and Google PageSpeed Core Web Vitals optimization is critically important for search engines. To improve the metrics, we carried out code minification, removed unnecessary scripts, and configured lazy loading for media files.

CDN and Code Optimization Connecting CloudFlare and removing heavy plugins allowed us to reduce the number of server requests. The finishing touch was updating the core and migrating to PHP 8.3, which ensured safe and fast operation of the news portal even during extreme traffic spikes.

Recommendations for creating a website on WordPress from Solar Digital:

Here are some general tips available for implementation by almost anyone: Study the CMS codex. Every developer needs to understand the internal logic of the system for correct operation. Configure caching. This will significantly accelerate page loading so users don’t get frustrated by waiting. Study different methods and choose the most suitable one. Install themes and plugins wisely. Avoid unnecessary functionality, and the overall site speed optimization will remain at a high level even as content grows. Update WordPress and PHP. Timely updates close vulnerabilities and improve system stability. Use an SEO-friendly approach. Make the resource visible to search engines by paying attention not only to content but also to the technical condition of the code to improve visibility online.

Common Weaknesses of WordPress

Security

WordPress is an open-source system that requires constant attention to protection. Regular updates of the core and plugins are a mandatory condition for preventing spam, phishing, and SEO manipulation.

Code

WordPress PHP code can be used most effectively by following the official CMS codex. Adhering to these standards minimizes the number of errors and conflicts in the future.

Taxonomies

Taxonomies (post and product attributes) can become a bottleneck for large projects. If a site has tens of thousands of items with many properties, the system spends a lot of resources iterating through them. In such cases, WordPress site optimization requires a special approach to data architecture in order to maintain high performance.

Too Many Plugins and Themes

An excess of extensions is the main enemy of performance. Each new plugin increases the number of server requests. To ensure faster site loading, it is important to maintain code hygiene and use only truly necessary and compatible tools.

Final Result

User feedback helped us pinpoint and eliminate the barriers that were preventing normal operation. We implemented a set of strategies: from reorganizing taxonomies to migrating to high-speed hosting, which together provided a tangible acceleration of WordPress. Systematic updates of components and query optimization allowed us to eliminate overloads and prepare the resource for growth. As a result, the development of a scalable news site was successfully completed, demonstrating impressive performance. Today the platform is capable of stably handling over 1 million users per month. We continue to improve the project, understanding that quality optimization of a site for a large number of visitors is a continuous process that guarantees compliance with the highest demands of the audience.
